Obituary for Helen Jopko (Danchak)

Helen  Jopko (Danchak)
Helen Jopko (nee Danchak) passed away in her 95th year after a brief illness on Tuesday November 8, 2016 in Port Dover, Ontario. She was preceded by her husband William Jopko, brothers Michael, Joe, Tom and sisters Mary and Stella. She is survived by sisters Kay and Verna, sons Garry (Gail) and Larry (See Ming), 7 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.

Helen was born near Vonda, Saskatchewan on February 25th, 1921 and came to Toronto in 1939 to seek employment. After a brief time looking after children in a home in Toronto, she went to work in the farm fields near La Salette, picking strawberries and tobacco. She met her future husband, Bill at a wedding and married in 1942. Eventually, they bought a farm near Scotland Ontario, and started with dairy and market gardening, and ended their farming career in tobacco. They settled into a home in Burford Ontario where they continued to work part time until Bill’s death in 1987. She moved some years later to Brantford, where she enjoyed her retirement being active in the Ukrainian Catholic Church, and other organizations. She is well remembered for being an excellent cook, with her doughnuts and perogies being especially sought after. She worked hard all her life and made friends in every place that she lived. She will be remembered by many.

Friends will be received at the KEITH OVINGTON FUNERAL HOME, 134 King Street, Burford on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Parish prayers will be held at the funeral home on Friday at 4:30 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Blessed Sacrament Church, 181 King Street, Burford, on Saturday November 12, 2016, at 11:00 a.m. Interment Pioneer Cemetery.
